Bringing Style and Substance to Your Outdoors

Hey there, Nottingham folks! As we wave goodbye to 2023, we at ED Paving are thrilled to take you on a little tour of some of our favourite driveway and patio projects from the past year. It’s been a busy time, full of creativity, hard work, and tons of paving slabs! Whether you’re thinking about sprucing up your own outdoor space or just love a good before-and-after, you’re in for a treat.

A Driveway for Every Home

Let’s kick off with driveways. We’ve had the chance to work on a variety of homes, each with its unique flair. From the cosy bungalows to the grand, stately homes, our team has been all over Nottingham, transforming front spaces into welcoming entrances.

Resin-Bound Beauty: We’re talking sleek, smooth, and seriously stylish. Some of our standout projects this year featured resin-bound driveways. Not only do they look super modern, but they’re also durable and low-maintenance. One particular project in West Bridgford turned a dull, cracked drive into a glossy, inviting path that truly lifted the home’s facade.

Classic Block Paving: Ah, the timeless charm of block paving. We’ve laid down quite a few of these, each with its unique pattern and colour scheme. One of our favourites was a herringbone pattern with a contrasting border in Carlton – absolutely transformed the property’s curb appeal!

Gravel’s Rustic Charm: For those who love a bit of crunch under their tyres, our gravel driveways have been a hit. We did a lovely, sprawling gravel drive out in Beeston that blended perfectly with the home’s rustic setting. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly option that allows for natural drainage.

Patios to Lounge On

Moving to the back of the house, our patio projects have been all about creating spaces for relaxation and entertainment.

Sleek Porcelain: Porcelain patios have been a big hit this year, and it’s easy to see why. They give off a clean, contemporary vibe that’s just perfect for modern homes. We did one in Long Eaton that’s now the envy of the neighbourhood – it’s like an outdoor lounge!

Natural Stone Elegance: For a more classic look, our natural stone patios are always a winner. We worked on a gorgeous sandstone patio in Sherwood that just oozes elegance. It’s the perfect spot for a cuppa and a good book.

Quirky Paver Patterns: We love getting creative with paver patterns, and it seems like you do too! One of our most fun projects was a circular pattern patio in Arnold – it’s like a piece of art you can walk on.

Looking Forward

As we look ahead to 2024, we’re buzzing with excitement for all the new projects and challenges it’ll bring. If you’re in Nottingham and thinking about giving your driveway or patio a makeover, give us a shout – we’d love to make your outdoor space dreams come true.

That’s it from us for now. Here’s to a new year full of more fantastic paving projects! 🎉🏡

When it comes to choosing the best material for your driveway, you will find most companies offer plenty of choices that include tarmac and resin. Deciding which to use can be a little daunting, but there are a few factors you can consider making your choice easier. For many people, one of the most important factors is the style of your property; do you live in a modern or period property? You want your finished driveway to be in keeping with the rest of the property and others in the local area. So, what is the difference between a tarmac and resin driveway, and which should you choose?

Tarmac v Resin

Most people can visualise what a tarmac driveway might look like when it’s complete, but this is not always the case with resin, so it is worth looking at some images. It is a newer finish, but it has gained popularity over the last decade because it offers a slightly less commercial finish. It could be the perfect choice for you so let’s look at some of the pros and cons of both finishes.

The Pros

Tarmac is a tried and tested medium for creating a driveway that has a very durable finish and will look tidy for many years to come. It is naturally very weather-resistant, and it is a cheaper option when compared to the block paved driveways you sometimes see. This is fundamentally down to the installation cost because it’s much quicker to lay tarmac than other options. Tarmac also offers a minimal maintenance finish giving you a long-lasting product that will handle everything you throw at it.

Resin has a different look and feel, and it’s also a porous finish. This makes it particularly attractive in urban areas as it is known as a Sustainable Urban Drainage System acting as a soakaway in times of heavy rain. When water hits the tarmac, it will run away to the lowest point, and it is not permeable in any way, so you could end up with pools of water that take a long time to dissipate. Resin allows water to filter down into the ground underneath it, which negates standing water. Therefore, it will also be less slippery when the mercury plummets and conditions become icy. In addition, it gives a better grip underfoot. There are many different coloured resins available which make it slightly more adaptable than the single black finish of tarmac; it is also a tough wearing and durable surface that is not affected by UV light.

Cons

As mentioned, tarmac finish comes in one colour only, which can change the feel from a domestic dwelling to something more industrial that not all customers like. In addition, frequent turning and the movement of the wheels can damage both tarmac and resin. When comparing the two, resin is the least resistant, so if you have a particularly small driveway and will be accessing it from the same angle every time, you may want to consider a different surface.

Some great examples of resin driveways can be seen here, quality resin needs to be laid around 18mm thick to prevent movement.

Reliability

When it comes to how you are looking into choosing a provider, you have to think about reliability. Reliability is such an important characteristic for any company to think about, because it really sets a precedent when it comes to how the standard of service is delivered.

If you pick a reliable company, you’re going to get a reliable service. The quality will be the same every time, and this makes such a difference. At the end of the day, you have to pick the options which work for you, and this can be pretty challenging.

That’s why it can really pay dividends to have a reliable company on hand to help you out. By carefully taking a look at what’s on offer, you can get access to services that deliver every time.

Familiarity

Let’s be honest here. You want to be familiar with things, because it makes such a difference when it comes to how well you can get things done.

Now obviously, a good provider helps with that. They give you the necessary familiarity and the comfort of knowing what you’ll get each time. Taking a look at some of the different options is vital for success, because it gives you the experiences you’ve been searching for.

You’ll get the choices that you need without having to worry about whether or not there’s a consistent level of service – there will be.

We have been busy working on all types of driveways, patios and landscapes this month, for January we have been extremely busy and the cold snap hasn’t stopped us in our tracks when it comes to installing the best patios in the Derby areas.

This project was to replace a tired and unhappy looking patio area that had really seen better days. The old slabs had become uneven and needed to be stabilised so this gave us the chance to add our standard Type 1 Hardcore to prevent weeds and keep a level patio area.

Once we had this covered, we then installed these lovely misty grey polished sandstone on a complete bed of concrete. Just look at the difference between the old and new.

We specialise in patios and pathways and have installed all types from some of the best manufacturers in the UK, if you are thinking of upgrading your garden, driveway or outdoor space, speak to the team here at ED Paving today for a free no obligation quote.

What are the benefits of having a tarmac driveway?

Tarmac driveways are cost effective, more cost effective than concrete. Besides it’s cost efficiency you can also receive a quicker turn around of job completion as it takes less time to install a tarmac driveway when compared to other driveway solutions saving both time and money. Tarmac is quick drying meaning you don’t have to wait long to use the driveway to park your vehicle.

Tarmac is highly weather resistant and can survive anything from storms to hail and ice. The tarmac is also highly durable when parking large vehicles and  the smooth finish of the driveway provides skid resistance. This skid resistance also helps to accumulation less snow and ice. Tarmac driveways installed with block paving perimeters offer a sophisticated appearance.

Tarmac is even better than concrete for recycling as it can be used infinitely. It can be used literally over and over again, without losing a single piece. This is great news for the environmentally conscious among us.

Construction of a tarmac driveway helps to preserve natural resources. Unlike other materials, tarmac doesn’t run into waterways. When looking for a tarmac driveway company you need to be sure they are experienced and have the relevant qualifications to perform the work, the wrong people for the job can leave you in a heap of trouble.
